The 20th-century French composer and organist Maurice Duruflé published only a small number of works, of which his Requiem is by far the longest and most substantial. In each movement, he quotes and amplifies the Gregorian chant melodies of the burial mass, reflecting, in the composer’s own words, “the anguish of man faced with the mystery of his final end.” We feature the young virtuoso organist Stephen Buzard in a program that also includes a selection of spirituals and anthems that contemplate the afterlife.
